Nathan Williams' Wavves is the best no-fi band out there. Period. In a year when labels like Woodsist, In the Red and Not Not Fun, to name but a few, inundated us with a whole lot of lo-fi/no-fi racket, Williams stood comfortably among the horde with superior pop writing skills and a constant lovable grin, even when he was fucking things way up. While live Wavves is all about a consistent surf/punk/pop onslaught, on wax things get a little weirder, a little more intimate, and more interesting than your average verse verse chorus punk band. Noise experiments sit comfortably alongside no-fi ragers followed up by experiments in psychedelia. Of all the bands out there jockeying for infamy in the whole huge shitgaze scene, Wavves is the band that should still be making great albums ten years from now. Williams certainly has the talent to make that happen, with or without all that distortion.
