Similar to Ernest Greene's Washed Out, Matthew Mondanile's Ducktails is a post-graduate project cooked up while living at home with the parents. Like Greene, Mondanile traffics in faux-nostalgia, creating music that permits the listener memories that are better than the real thing. But whereas Greene's music provides cotten candy synths to rest your weary head on, Mondanile prefers a good old fashioned lo-fi guitar to wash those blues away. There are moments when Ducktails sounds like a long lost Pavement demo of their more mellow moments. Add to that a little Sun Araw like dabbling in surf, sun-kissed psychedelia, and even a little new age, and you have the making of a very stimulating, but comforting album. And let's face it, sometimes we need to drift away, even if it is only in our mind, and Ducktails knows just how to get us there.
